I had an amazing time and would definitely recommend it!

It’s an old Econo Lodge. Appears they are trying to update. Halls smelled like smoke and marijuana. Broken window in lobby near breakfast area.
When you first walk into Sonesta Essential Des Moines, it appears to be a nice hotel. However, my experience quickly turned sour. While I appreciate that they are dog-friendly and a 100% non-smoking facility, the reality upon arrival was quite different. We were assigned to room 108, and as we walked down the hallway, the overwhelming smell of dog urine was foul and off-putting. I understand accommodating families with dogs, but no one wants to be greeted by that scent. Upon entering room 108, we were immediately hit with the smell of cigarettes and mildew. The bedding skirting was filthy, and the sheets were in no better condition. I went back to the front desk to request a different room and was moved to room 162. While room 162 had a slightly better smell, it was still absolutely filthy. There were boogers on the wall by the lampshades, every drawer handle was crusted with gunk, and the drawers themselves were disgusting, filled with leftover food crumbs and what appeared to be mouse droppings. The floor looked like it hadn't been swept in ages. Frustrated, I once again had to go to the office and request yet another room. After looking at three different rooms, we were finally put into room 202. We had booked for two nights, and I honestly wish I had spent my money elsewhere. If I could give a zero-star review, I absolutely would. This hotel needs serious cleaning and maintenance to meet even the most basic standards. Save your money and look for a different place to stay.
