PrincevilleWe were recommended 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay by a number of people and were genuinely excited for our stay. The hotel itself is undeniably beautiful and picturesque, but as a 5-star resort, it fell short in several key areas. We arrived at 3:30 PM (check-in is at 4 PM), and while they took our luggage and stroller to be delivered to the room (which we appreciated), we assumed we’d be heading up shortly after. Instead, the check-in process was underwhelming. The staff manager helping us seemed disinterested and told us we’d receive a text once the room was ready. We didn’t get access until 5 PM, an hour after the posted check-in time. With two young kids (5 and 1 years old), waiting around without our belongings after a long day of travel was stressful. Although the hotel offered $150 in credit for the delay, we would’ve much preferred simply getting into our room on time, something we’ve never had an issue with at other hotels, let alone a luxury hotel. The room itself was another letdown. We booked a “Pool View Terrace Two Queens” based on the photo shown on booking.com, which featured a large deck and two sun beds, ideal for lounging while keeping an eye on the kids. What we got was a much smaller deck with just a table and two chairs, hardly enough space to enjoy. From walking around the property, it seems only a few rooms match the photo shown. The rest, like ours, should be classified differently. It felt misleading and disappointing to receive something different from what was advertised. Dining was another challenge. While we were excited to try the restaurants, all dinner reservations were booked for the entire duration of our stay. As a family with small kids, we need some flexibility, and paying a fee for a reservation we might not be able to make wasn’t a good option. We attempted a walk-in on our first night, were told it’d be a 30 minute wait and that we’d get a text when a table was ready. That text never came, and we ended up eating at the bar.
