In a world adapting to the new norms of travel, Mr. O and I chose Aruba for its strict COVID-19 testing requirements, ensuring a safer vacation experience. Flying with American Airlines, we utilized our British Airways Avios points, complemented by easy transfers from American Express and Chase Ultimate Rewards, making our journey both cost-effective and delightful. Our adventure began at the bustling, yet efficiently managed Charlotte American Airlines Lounge, which has adapted well to COVID-19 restrictions with innovative snack options and socially distanced seating.
The journey to Aruba involves detailed COVID-19 testing protocols. Visitors navigate long lines and thorough checks to ensure safety, all of which are thoroughly detailed on the Visit Aruba website, the go-to source for updated travel requirements. Armed with these preparations, we breezed through the airport lines, rented a car via Hotwire to explore the island's beauty, and set off to our luxurious accommodation, all while marveling at the island's relatively empty streets—a stark contrast to its usual bustling setting filled with cruise tourists.
Our stay at the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort and Spa was nothing short of spectacular. Thanks to their current promotions and world-class service, we successfully used our World of Hyatt credit card points for a free stay without incurring additional resort fees or taxes. Our room was lavishly upgraded in celebration of our anniversary, giving us sweeping views of the surroundings. Even with low-tier status, Hyatt Regency impressed us deeply, setting a new standard for our future travels.
No trip is complete without sampling the local cuisine. Our culinary adventure took us to Lola, a vibrant spot in Aruba known for its delectable tacos and burgers. A hit on sites like TripAdvisor, this bustling eatery offers affordable meal deals with a lively ambiance. With their extended happy hours, Lola stands as a perfect venue for an energetic start to any evening.
If tranquil, sun-kissed shores are what you seek, Baby Beach beckons with its serene waters and beautiful vistas. Located 40 minutes from the high-rise district of Aruba, this beach is a local favorite, celebrated for its peaceful and breathtaking environs. While the absence of vendors may limit typical tourist amenities, its clear waters and local charm offer an unmatched retreat.
Just a short drive from Baby Beach lies the Saint Nicholas Arts District, an enchanting area brimming with creativity. As you wander through its streets, you'll encounter vibrant murals and captivating galleries—perfect for a leisurely afternoon immersed in art and culture. During our visit, the district was delightfully quiet, providing the ideal backdrop for photos and reflection.
For food lovers, no visit to Aruba is complete without a meal at Zeerover, often recommended by locals for its fresh, savoury seafood offerings. This popular spot allows diners to order by the pound, delivering authentic tastes of the sea directly to your plate against the stunning backdrop of Aruba's waters. A must-visit for those seeking island flavors and a fantastic lunch setting.
Our culinary delights continued at Diana's Pancake Place, known for serving delicious Dutch-style pancakes. With indulgent options that delight and overwhelm the senses, it's the perfect breakfast spot before heading to Eagle Beach, a low-key haven for relaxation and mild water activities. Here, locals and tourists blend seamlessly, enjoying calm waves and idyllic conditions.
The quest for authentic flavors led us to Silla and Wacky Wahoo, two distinct dining experiences in Aruba. Silla delighted us with its Haitian cuisine, while Wacky Wahoo satisfied our cravings for Caribbean seafood. Each offered shockingly different tastes yet both embodied the essence of local dining, making for a truly satisfying culinary journey.
With bags packed, we reminisced on a trip that was safe, vibrant, and heartwarming. Aruba, an island commitment to ensuring visitor safety through stringent testing requirements, left us feeling cared for and free to explore its unique charms. From enchanting beaches to local dining delights and artistic enclaves, this trip exceeded our expectations and reinforced the allure of travel during these uncertain times.
