Fez, a city of ancient wisdom and vibrant cultures, is a mesmerizing destination in Morocco that promises an unforgettable journey through time. Once a thriving center of commerce and culture, the city encapsulates centuries of history within its labyrinthine streets and architectural marvels. As travellers, we embarked on a 48-hour adventure, soaking in its rich tapestry of tradition and history while relishing in its unique blend of Berber and Arab influences. From its medieval Medina to the serene Jnan Sbil Gardens, Fez holds surprises at every turn.
Upon arriving in Fez at dawn, we found solace at Riad Dar Pierre, a serene haven in the heart of the bustling Medina. The early check-in was a blessing, allowing us to unwind after a long journey. This traditional Moroccan guesthouse offered a quaint yet cozy retreat with its artistic beauty and peaceful ambiance. From the rooftop, we watched the city wake up, bathed in hues of the first light. Breakfast was a culinary delight, featuring an array of Moroccan delicacies to fuel our day of exploration.
Fez is renowned for its impressive religious and educational centers, with the Al Attarine Madrasa as one its more remarkable examples. Just a short walk from our riad, this architectural masterpiece beckoned with its stunning artistry and historical significance. Built by the Marinid Sultan Uthman II at the beginning of the 14th century, the madrasa stands as a testament to Morocco's rich Islamic architectural heritage. Admiring its intricate tiles and carved woodwork felt like stepping back in time, while the peaceful courtyard offered a serene respite from the bustling city streets.
For a genuine taste of Morocco, Berrada Family Restaurant was an absolute must. Located near the Al-Attarine Madrasa, this hidden gem had a welcoming atmosphere and home-cooked meals that echoed familial warmth. As we were ushered into the kitchen to sample dishes, the savory aromas captivated our senses. The experience went beyond taste; it was a celebration of Morocco's culinary heritage crafted by the Berrada family for generations. We left with happy hearts and satisfied appetites, ready to continue our Fez journey.
No visit to Fez is complete without experiencing the sensory adventure of the Chouara Tanneries. As one of the city's oldest and most iconic industries, these tanneries showcase a time-honored tradition of leather dyeing. Awestruck, we watched as workers skillfully tended to the leather in large stone vats filled with vibrant dyes. Despite the pungent aromas, the vivid explosion of colors and the historic methods employed were nothing short of fascinating. For a truly immersive experience, venture to the tanneries early in the morning to catch the craftspeople at work.
Our journey continued with a visit to Dar Al-Magana, renowned for its ancient water clock steeped in mystery. Though no longer in working order, the intricate façade and historic significance of this 14th-century marvel left us pondering the past feats of Moroccan engineering. Just across lies the Bou Inania madrasa, another marvel that speaks to the architectural prowess of the Marinid era. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into Fez's storied contributions to academia and culture.
Feasting continued as we found a delightful restaurant near the madrasa. With a rooftop boasting panoramic views of the Medina, Mom's Touch offered delectable Moroccan staples like Chicken Tajine and Pastilla. These traditional dishes were prepared infusing flavours that were both familiar and exciting. Sitting high above the cityscape, we savoured each bite while contemplating our next stops in the historical heart of Fez.
In the afternoon heat, Jnan Sbil Gardens provided a lush sanctuary amidst the bustling cityscape. Established in the 19th century, these gardens perfectly blend history and nature, offering a harmonious retreat with their greenery, fountains, and tranquil pathways. Birds chirping overhead and gentle breezes made it easy to lose track of time as we soaked in the serenity. This vibrant arboreal oasis was a refreshing highlight of our exploration, an invitation to pause, breathe, and relish the moment.
Our next historical stop was the Jewish Cemetery, a poignant reminder of the rich cultural tapestry woven into Fez’s history. The stark white tombs mark centuries of Jewish presence in the city, reflecting a once-thriving community that significantly contributed to Morocco's cultural dynamism. Silent and evocative, the cemetery stands as a testament to the enduring heritage and multicultural narratives that define Fez.
A trip to Fez wouldn't be complete without admiring the golden gates of the Royal Palace. Though closed to the public, the gates themselves are a sight to behold, intricate and magnificent with their golden hues and elaborate embellishments. The Royal Palace, with its origins dating back to the Alawi dynasty, highlights Morocco's regal legacy and offers a picturesque backdrop for photos that capture Fez's historic charm.
Our 48-hour journey through Fez was an extraordinary dance through time, a captivating blend of past and present.
