Tasmania, an island state of history, charm and stunning landscapes, offering a unique blend of experiences for any adventurous traveler. Whether it's the beauty of its coastlines, the intriguing past captured in its historic towns, or the untouched wilderness of its mountains, Tasmania promises an unforgettable journey. This is the Tasmania itinerary you'll want to steal!!
Landing in Hobart, Tasmania's vibrant capital, you'll immediately be greeted by its inviting atmosphere and reputation for having some of the world's cleanest air. Start your adventure at the Hobart Waterfront, a lively hub where boats bob amidst a backdrop of cafes and bars. Let this scene be your introduction to Tasmania's easygoing vibe before heading to Mount Wellington, where you can get a true picture of the city and beyond. Feel the chill on the summit and let the fresh air fill your lungs as you take in your surroundings. Welcome to Tasmania!
On your first day, immerse yourself in Tasmania's convict past at Port Arthur. Known as one of Australia's most significant heritage sites, this former penal settlement is steeped in history and emotion. Before reaching Port Arthur, take time to explore Eaglehawk Neck, a narrow land strip with a security barrier called The Dog Line that once made escape impossible for convicts, or did it? At Port Arthur, walk through its haunting ruins and reflect on the tales of resilience and reform that echo through its grounds. On the way back to Hobart make a slight detour via Richmond, one of Tasmania’s most charming historic villages. Just a short drive from Hobart, it’s home to Australia’s oldest stone arch bridge, the heritage-listed Richmond Bridge. Finish the day back in Hobart by having a beer at Cascades Brewery, the oldest brewery in Australia. Cheers!
Day 2 take in Hobart’s dark convict past to world-class art and finally a quiet coastal escape. The Cascades Female Factory in Hobart is one of Australia’s most significant convict heritage sites, once home to thousands of women and children during the 19th century. Set against the backdrop of the old sandstone walls, the site shares powerful stories of hardship, resilience and survival through immersive exhibits and guided tours. From here head to Mona. MONA — the Museum of Old and New Art — is Tasmania’s bold, provocative and brilliantly unconventional gallery. Built into a sandstone cliff above the Derwent River, it showcases everything from contemporary installations to ancient artefacts, all presented in a way that challenges, surprises and inspires. With its striking architecture, underground labyrinth of galleries and boundary-pushing exhibitions, MONA is one of Australia’s most unforgettable cultural experiences. In the afternoon hit the road for a 90 minute drive up Tasmania’s scenic east coast to Swansea. Swansea is a peaceful seaside town on Tasmania’s east coast, known for its sweeping views across Great Oyster Bay to the Hazards mountain range. With historic cottages, quiet beaches and a relaxed coastal vibe, it’s a perfect base for exploring nearby Freycinet National Park or simply unwinding by the water. Seafood, scenic sunsets and gentle coastal walks make Swansea a charming stop on any Tassie road trip.
Day 3 and it's time to step things up a notch! Kick it off with a breathtaking 30-minute scenic helicopter flight with Freycinet Air, the best way to view the pefect curve of Wineglass Bay — an unforgettable experience from above. Back on the ground, hike to the Wineglass Bay Lookout inside the National Park (about 1.0 hour return, a steady but manageable climb), then continued down the steep track to the beach itself (around 2.5 hours return, and definitely more challenging). Standing on that pure white sand will make every step worth it and you will understand why Wineglass Bay is consistantly rated of the best beaches in the world. Afterwards, celebrate with a fantastic lunch at Freycinet Marine Farm — just a short drive back from the National Park visitor centre. The oysters and mussels are next level. What a day!
Day 4 - start with a scenic drive from Swansea to the historic township of Campbell Town — about 50 minutes — famous for its rich convict heritage, the iconic Red Bridge, and the Convict Brick Trail that runs through the centre of town. After exploring, we continued 15 minutes south to the charming village of Ross. Known for its beautifully preserved sandstone buildings, cobbled bridge, and peaceful tree-lined streets, Ross offers a fascinating glimpse into early colonial Tasmania. From there we drove on to Brickendon Estate just outside Launceston, one of Australia’s oldest continuously run farming properties and a UNESCO World Heritage-listed convict site. With its 19th-century farm buildings, gardens and homestead, it’s a remarkable window into early Tasmanian rural life. We wrapped up the day in Launceston, checking in for the night at the Hotel Grand Chancellor before our next day of adventures.
In Launceston, explore Cataract Gorge, which is right on the edge of the city and a must visit. As you cross the suspension bridge or glide on the world's longest chairlift, you'll marvel at the beauty right within the city's proximity. Then, take the 2 hour drive up to Cradle Mountain, where you may even be greeted with snow! Cradle Mountain offers unparalleled serenity and an experience you are going to treasure. Rug up next to a fire at the Discovery Park Wilderness Lodge and get ready for an unforgettable next 24 hours!!
Day 6 is pure Cradle Mountain magic. Set out on the Dove Lake Trail, walking the full 6km circuit, and if you're lucky surrounded by fresh snow blanketing the peaks and boardwalks — a stunning backdrop that makes every step feel unforgettable. Later, wander through the Enchanted Walk, a short but beautiful forest trail full of mossy trees, rushing creeks and that classic Cradle Mountain atmosphere. As night falls, head to Devils at Cradle for an up-close encounter with Tasmania’s famous devils, learning about their behaviour and conservation while watching them feed and interact. An incredible mix of scenery, wildlife and adventure.
On the final day, travel back to Hobart and lose yourself in the bustling Salamanca Market, celebrated not only for its size but also for the authenticity and character of its stalls. With local crafts, food, and a warm atmosphere that showcases Tasmania’s community spirit, this market is a perfect conclusion to your Tasmanian getaway. Treat yourself on your final night at one of Hobart's most fashionable hotels, The Henry Jones Art Hotel.
Your Tasmanian adventure may be over, but the memories and experiences will linger long after you've left. From profound historical insights to breathtaking natural vistas, Tasmania offers a unique escape that leaves an indelible mark on every traveler. Until your next journey, Tazzy will be waiting, ready to unveil even more wonders. Enjoy!!
