Our journey began with a scenic bus ride from Waterloo to Square One Mall bus terminal in Mississauga, followed by a quick stop at Pearson Airport. From there, we started our flight to Iceland with great anticipation. Upon landing, we boarded the pre-booked Fly Bus that took us directly to Reykjavik. The bus was incredibly comfortable, equipped with Wi-Fi and charging ports, making the trip enjoyable.
Landing in Iceland felt exhilarating. Despite the notorious Icelandic wind, we made our way into Reykjavik to put our bags in luggage lockers. Finding these lockers was a bit challenging, and once we located them, we had to be careful not to overfill. Our main aim was to explore Reykjavik's culinary delights and sights before diving into our adventure.
A must-visit spot was Bread and Co, where we indulged in, possibly, the best cinnamon bun ever, a recommendation from many travelers and locals alike. The warmth, softness, and perfect blend of cinnamon and sugar made it an unforgettable treat. Not far from there, we tasted the traditional offering from Viking Hot Dogs - a staple for those wanting an authentic Icelandic fast food experience.
The culinary exploration was marked with delightful discoveries. Our quick bites not only filled our stomachs but also gave us a taste of Iceland's unique blend of flavors amidst the backdrop of its bustling capital.
We moved towards Reykjavik Campsite, hoping to get some much-needed rest after traveling. Despite the strong winds, the campsite was equipped and clean with ample facilities. After dealing with unforeseen tent issues, we managed to patch things up for the night, experiencing the communal spirit and kindness of fellow campers.
Hiking the Laugavegur Trail was meant to be the highlight of our trip. However, the unpredictable Icelandic weather turned fierce, making the trek perilous. As the situation deteriorated, we opted to return to the trail's beginning, ensuring our safety. This decision led us back to Reykjavik with tales and experiences of the trail's challenges.
Unfazed by setbacks, we redirected our energy to explore Iceland by car. With a newfound willingness to embrace whatever the journey would throw at us, we planned to visit waterfalls and other natural wonders, blessed with better weather and equipped with a more flexible itinerary.
In retrospect, the unpredictable elements added a layer of adventure, casting our Icelandic trip into a saga we'll recount for years. It taught us resilience and reminded us of the kindness of strangers—the true beauty of travel.
