Solo

Adventure

Foodie

Setting out on my first solo international trip to Scotland, I was filled with excitement and a touch of apprehension. Edinburgh's medieval charm and the natural splendor of the Scottish Highlands awaited me. Though I wished my travel companion, Maui, could join me on this journey, I couldn't resist the allure of Scotland's historical and mystical landscapes.

Journey from London to Edinburgh

From London, my adventure began at the bustling King's Cross Station. Famous amongst Harry Potter fans for its platform 9 and 3/4, the station even offers an opportunity for travelers to capture a piece of the magic. After picking up my ticket from a kiosk and a quick breakfast at the train's café, I boarded the LNER train. The journey to Edinburgh’s Waverley Station was both comfortable and scenic, offering glimpses of the UK countryside that made the four-hour trip feel all too brief.

Exploring Enchanting Edinburgh

Upon arrival in Edinburgh, the rain welcomed me as I made my way through the city. Despite the weather, the sight of majestic medieval architecture made every step worthwhile. My stay was at the modern and efficient Yotel Edinburgh, which offered ideal accommodations for solo travelers at a fair price. The convenient self-check-in kiosk ensured a swift end to my journey, and provided a comfortable space to recharge.
Braving the rain once more, I set out to Severinos, a famed Italian pizza spot tucked away in Hunter Square. The allure of the signature Civerinos pizza was irresistible, and the combination of pepperoni, Sicilian fennel sausage, and creamy burrata made the rainy walk immensely rewarding. Edinburgh's narrow alleyways and staircase paths provided a picturesque route that felt like stepping into a film.
To escape the persistent drizzle, I found solace in the halls of the Scottish National Gallery, where a trove of European and Scottish art awaited. With free entry, it was the perfect cultural respite, housing masterpieces that inspired and delighted me. This creative haven offered a brief yet captivating experience of Edinburgh's rich artistic heritage.

Highlands and Lochs: A Day of Adventure

Early the next day, I embarked on a much-anticipated tour of the Scottish Highlands, aptly named the Loch Ness and Highland Day Tour. With Rabby's tour, we journeyed through serene landscapes marked by towering mountains and expansive lochs. The small group size made for a more intimate and personal exploration of Scotland's legendary terrain.
Our first stop in Perthshire allowed us to refuel and sightsee. Here, I encountered Scotland’s adorable Highland cows, their shaggy fur and endearing demeanor adding to the charm of our visit. Perthshire's quaint offerings and friendly locals left a lasting impression.
Continuing our adventure, we reached Fort Augustus, the gateway to the enigmatic Loch Ness. This charming town, with its castle-like hotels and serene canals, was a picturesque stop on our route to the depths of Celtic myth.
Aboard the Lochness cruise, I traversed the legendary waters in search of the fabled Nessie, learning about the loch's history and the intricate sonar systems used to track its mysteries. While the elusive monster remained hidden, the breathtaking views of the Highland landscape were worth every moment on the water.

Final Adventures and Reflections

On my final day, I ventured to Helix Park to marvel at The Kelpies, massive equine sculptures that loom majestically over the landscape. The park, rich with activities and art installations, provided a serene backdrop to the awe-inspiring structures that symbolize Scotland’s enduring spirit and industrious past.
Before departing Scotland, I indulged in a traditional English breakfast at the cozy Rose Street Cafe. This nourishing meal wrapped up my adventure perfectly, allowing me to reflect on the experiences and enchanting sights of my solo trip.
As I left this captivating country, a sense of gratitude washed over me for the memories made and the promise of return adventures. Three nights in Scotland were not nearly enough, and I departed with a heartfelt promise to return and explore the undulating landscapes and storied castles once again.
