My must-stay place in South Lake Tahoe is a place called Desolation Hotel. It's a newly-built micro resort. I love that it is even walking distance to Heavenly which has several shops and places to eat. The 3-story townhome El Dorado Townhomes are my favorite rooms that the hotel has to offer. The architecture is really tasteful with a beautiful modern design that blends well with the nature. The rooms offer all the amenities of home including a kitchen equipped with a stove and fridge and a ductless wall heater/ac unit. The townhomes even have their own one-car garage with EV chargers (Tesla and CCS). Most importantly it's dog-friendly! The amenities in the room are top-notch. It definitely feels like a peaceful home away from home nestled close to the mountains and lake while still near skiing and the action around Heavenly. Desolation Hotel also has a restaurant on site called Maggie's which offers fine dining. The staff is on site during the day. I can't recommend Desolation Hotel enough! There are also other places to close by including the Coachmen Hotel and Basecamp Tahoe South.
I love how many amazing food places there are to choose from in South Lake Tahoe. I can't visit without grabbing an iced coffee from Drink Coffee Do Something - their pines latte is seriously amazing! In addition to coffee, they offer quick bites to eat like yogurt parfaits/overnight oats and delicious bagel sandwiches. DCDS has several locations around the Lake Tahoe region. I also love starting the day with Trailfolk's avocado toast. It's a delectable dose of protein and within walking distance from Desolation Hotel. Base Camp Pizza is a staple! I can't visit Tahoe without grabbing one of their pizzas and salad. Their pasta is also so yummy. Jimmy's at the Landing Resort is truly a hidden gem. We had a wonderful dinner looking out on the lake. To be honest, it was the best steak I've ever had. Made for the perfect date night!
There are so many things to do when visiting South Lake Tahoe - especially when it comes to outdoor activities. The beauty of Lake Tahoe is breath-taking. One of my favorite ways to enjoy it is to go for a hike. Eagle Falls is a gorgeous hike that lets leashed dogs accompany. Although it is deemed an 'easier' hike, it does include lots of boulders and uneven surfaces, but leads to such a beautiful waterfall. The Van Sickle Bi-State Park trail has easier to traverse options but also can lead to sweeping views from the ascent forward the falls. The parking lot there has a neat California/Nevada demarkation grant for photo opportunities. In addition to hiking, another way to take in the beauty of the area is by water. There are several sightseeing cruises to take advantage of. Driving around Emerald Bay is one of my favorite ways to take in the beauty of Lake Tahoe. Inspiration Point is a wonderful place to park and stop off to soak in a gorgeous sunset. Sugar Pine State Park is dog-friendly and a great way to explore. They offer tours and the paths lead to a dock that extends into the lake. It's truly magical!
