Discover Houston's Charm Before Sailing Away

When planning a cruise from Galveston, spending an extra day in Houston can be just what you need to make your pre-cruise experience memorable. From interactive art installations to festive garden displays and standout eateries, Houston offers a plethora of activities to indulge in before you set sail. We recently spent a day in Houston before our cruise and found some not-to-be-missed gems!
Located conveniently beside Hobby Airport, Marriott Houston South offers travelers an ideal resting spot before heading to Galveston’s cruise port. This hotel provides comfortable and clean accommodations at an affordable rate, making it an excellent choice for those looking to stay a night before their voyage. Remember to be mindful of slower elevators, but the friendly atmosphere more than compensates for any minor inconveniences.
Immerse yourself in a world of art and creativity at Meow Wolf Houston. This engaging art exhibit whisks you away to a surreal universe where you can explore and unravel a unique story. With each new room offering a different imaginative environment, this interactive experience is perfect for those with a love for art and adventure. Whether you're a fan of Meow Wolf's diverse exhibits across the U.S. or a newcomer, this location promises endless exploration and intrigue.
The Radiant Nature event at the Houston Botanic Garden offers visitors a spectacular display of Chinese Lanterns in a breathtaking setting. As you stroll along the trail, larger-than-life installations celebrate nature and the Lunar New Year, transforming the garden into a night-time paradise. Although it didn't fully meet our expectations for energy and interactivity, the experience was unique and heartwarming, especially with unlimited hot chocolate to ward off the chill.
Spanky Pizza and Bar is the perfect spot for a satisfying meal before cruising. Located near Hobby Airport, this pizza joint doubles as a bar, offering a wide array of delicious, hearty pizzas. From their cheesy tater cakes appetizer to their sumptuous pizzas full of fresh ingredients, this local gem is sure to please any foodie's palate. Make it a point to stop by, especially if you're in the mood for a lively dining experience!
Before heading to the cruise port, don't miss The Original Kolache Shoppe, a hidden Houston treasure serving mouth-watering kolaches since 1956. Despite its modest storefront and limited parking, this bakery captures the heart and taste buds of locals and visitors alike. Perfect for a quick, delicious breakfast stop, the kolaches here are a Texan tradition you won't soon forget.

Incorporating a day in Houston before your cruise departure is a delightful way to kick-start your adventure with unique experiences and culinary delights. Whether you're embarking on this journey as a couple, a family, or solo, Houston's diverse attractions ensure there's something for every type of traveler. We hope our discoveries inspire your own pre-cruise itinerary, and we look forward to hearing about your Houston highlights in the comments!
