General tips: 

1. Book a car if you can — it's the best way to see the whole island! 
2. Break the island up into zones to avoid spending too much time driving. 
3. Some of the hikes on the island are paid, so be sure to bring cash. 
4. Make dinner reservations if you will be there on a weekend. 
5. You can see rain, shine, cold, and heat waves all in one day — so pack accordingly!

We landed in Funchal (Madeira's capital and where we would stay our whole trip) in the late afternoon so we made a dinner reservation to keep us awake after a long travel day.

Flower Festival: If you visit Madeira in May and can attend the annual Flower Festival, it is a beautiful celebration of Spring with a parade, dancing, floats, and costumes made of flowers!
