Flying to Cartagena with Copa Airlines

Our family journey to Cartagena, Colombia began with a comfortable business class flight on Copa Airlines for a shockingly affordable $397. Being part of the Star Alliance, we credited our flight to earn United Airline miles. Despite the short journey, the spacious leather seats offered premium comfort, although they weren't fully reclinable. Our in-flight experience included delicious meals with breakfast being a flavorful egg, potato, and spinach dish, and lunch consisting of a ham sandwich with a fruit bowl. 

Staying in Cartagena: Intercontinental Experience

Our stay in the Boca Grande district of Cartagena was centered at the Intercontinental, booked using IHG credit card free night certificates. While the location boasted stunning ocean views, the overall experience at the hotel was underwhelming with the impression of missing the usual upscale Intercontinental touch due to a lack of customer service and staff knowledge. Nonetheless, our Ocean View King room afforded a magnificent view, making it a decent stay.

Dining in Cartagena: From Alma to Nightspots

Our gastronomic journey in Cartagena began at Alma, a delightful restaurant nestled within an elegant hotel. Known for its exotic offerings like Snapper wrapped in coconut leaf, Alma set the perfect tone for our culinary adventures. Meanwhile, Monticello, a bustling venue with a live band, provided a charming atmosphere for dining, even on nights without reservations. Cartagena's vibrant eateries offered something for every palate!

Vibrant Experiences and Day Trips

Our day trip to Palenque was a deep dive into local history, revealing Cartagena's roots as the first free African town in the Americas, established in 1619. Although our transportation setup didn't allow for the most comfortable journey, the visit was richly educational and the cultural narratives captivating. Travelers should ensure reliable transport options to enhance comfort in exploring this significant historical site.

Our voyage to the Rosario Islands was an adventure in itself. Although the stormy waters gave us a bumpier ride than anticipated, reaching the serene island offered a peaceful retreat. It's a place of stunning beauty, ideal for those seeking to escape the city's hustle and bask in natural splendor — a must-visit for beach lovers.
