Start your day by traveling to the Boyana Church in the suburbs of Sofia (if this option is selected). See the historically significant frescoes of the Byzantine building and hear how they started the fashion of illustrating biblical figures with emotions and placing them alongside the local aristocracy.
After that, relax on the 2-hour drive to the Rila Monastery in the Rila Mountains. Upon arrival, explore the largest and most important Orthodox cloister in Bulgaria.
Important: As of November 2024, Boyana Church now does not take reservations in advance, so we can not guarantee all visits. If entry is unavailable on your booked day, you will be able to visit St. Ivan's Cave at Rila Monastery as an alternative.
Admire the arcaded balconies, and discover unique frescoes by one of the most famous painters of the Bulgarian National Revival period. See the gilded iconostasis and enjoy the fabulous mountain views.
Hear the story of the monastery from your guide before enjoying some time to explore the monastic complex on your own. Learn more at the museum, or purchase souvenir icons and other items in the nearby shops.
Take some time to refuel with lunch at one of the local restaurants, where you can purchase local dishes such as mekitsi (a traditional Bulgarian dish of kneaded dough made with yogurt that is deep-fried).

Das Rila-Kloster hat mir am besten gefallen. Der Guide hat alles sehr gut erklärt (Bulgarische Geschichte, Boyana-Kirche, Rila-Kloster) und hat noch Tipps für die Besichtigung von Sofia gegeben.
Obviously a great place to visit but if you don't do the Ivans cave then it's a long wait (approx 3h) after the brief tour around the monastery. There is a restaurant nearby with mediocre food and v quick service so hard to kill much time there. And it's very cold to wait outside while others do the cave (normally we'd have done this but currently injured so can't). I somehow thought the non cave group wouldn't be waiting for the cave lot so that's the main disappointment, but maybe it's my error and misunderstanding.
Het was overall a great tour- Boyana Church & Rila Monastery. It would have been great if we were allowed to enter Boyana church. Due to limited number of people who can get in, it was no longer possible for us. Tourguide knows a lot of things. He speaks good English. We were satisfied with the tour. I would suggest this tour to others.
Viaggio in pullman di ore, super comodo. La guida parlava bene l italiano e ha spiegato tutto molto, dalla storia agli affreschi sul monastero. La consiglio vivamente!
Antonio was an outstanding tour guide. Very friendly and knowledgeable with just the right balance of interesting input and time to stroll around. Highly recommended
Overall the trip was good. Both driver Nikolay and tour guide is great. Our tour guide Liubomir has been the best one , he is very caring. He also had so much knowledge to share. I recommend to join this trip.
