Royal Hotel

We weren't able to book our usual mid-range option so had some trepidation about this hotel but the Royal proved to be an absolute winner. The Royal is a large older style hotel with wonderful original design. The rooms are spacious and high-ceilinged; ours had a balcony onto the quiet street below. Although there was no breakfast available, there was a really good restaurant, Battambang Corner Restaurant, over the road that was open all day for excellent breakfasts, meals and drinks. Our quiet street led directly to the splendid Psar Nat and the surrounding streets with fantastic old buildings. The river was a very short walk away. The staff were very kind. It seemed like a family affair and several members spoke English, Ly perfectly and Dina quite enough to be helpful. They have a splendid rooftop which I had a quick look at, that is out of commission at present. This will be a great asset to them once it is up and running again. Highly recommended for an authentic experience in a fascinating town. We would return in a heart beat.

We were disappointed to find no food available when we arrived but the convenient Battambang Corner Restaurant alleviated that completely. We had no kettle and cups on arrival but on looking at the booking again, realised a kettle wasn't mentioned in the room amenities. Dina was quickly on the case and these items were in our room on return from lunch. A quick trip down to reception the next day obtained the appropriate adaptor plug and we were up and running for early cups of tea.

The staff was friendly and helpful. They arranged a free tuk tuk-drive from the bus stop and I had an excellent tuk tuk driver/guide for the next day. My room was spacious and clean.

The location was good right next to a couple of restaurants. Staff was helpful and nice. Owner was really kind. Would recommend.

Drains in the bathroom smell, but I think that's pretty normal in SE Asia. Just kept the bathroom door shut and it was fine!
