Couples

Adventure

Tokyo, a city where the ultramodern and the traditional effortlessly intertwine, offers a unique adventure for couples seeking both thrill and cultural enrichment. From the moment you land at Tokyo's bustling airport, you'll be swept into a whirlwind of experiences, from cutting-edge art installations to serene temple gardens. Our trip began with a smooth but adventurous journey, flying through Lisbon to Paris with Air France. The overnight flights were optimized with a handy foot hammock from Amazon, a travel gadget I can't recommend enough for those long hauls.

Discovering the Wonders of Ginza

Our journey in Tokyo kicked off in Ginza, one of Tokyo's most glamorous districts. Staying at the Grand Hotel in Ginza introduced us to a blend of comforts and high-tech marvels, such as automatic lights and music, welcoming us warmly into the heart of Japan. A dizzying list of shopping outlets and food courts lie just steps away, while 7-Elevens across the city offer delightful, affordable Japanese snacks anytime. If you're planning a visit, Ginza is a perfect starting point for your romantic Tokyo adventure.
After a jet-lagged start, we ventured to the mesmerizing Art Aquarium, a short subway ride from the hotel. With its stunning displays of aquatic beauty and visually pleasing light exhibits, it was the perfect gentle excursion to dip our toes into Tokyo's rich art scene. We recommend booking tickets in advance and visiting early to avoid crowds, enjoying the tranquility as you wander through this aquatic wonderland.
Next, we casually strolled through the Imperial Palace Gardens. This lush, well-manicured park offers a serene contrast to the bustling streets. Comparable to New York’s Central Park, the gardens are a peaceful enclave that invites travelers to pause and appreciate Tokyo's harmonious blend of nature and architecture. Be sure to keep hydrated, especially if you're visiting during the warmer months.

Views from the Tokyo Skytree to Shibuya's Bustle

Our adventure continued at the Tokyo Skytree, one of Japan's most iconic structures. This towering edifice offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the sprawling metropolis below. It's remarkable how the city sprawls beneath you, a sea of lights and buildings stretching to the horizon. Beneath the Skytree, a delightful mall awaits with plenty of dining options, and we enjoyed delicious local eats at very reasonable prices.
A short metro journey takes you to Shibuya, home to another spectacular viewpoint. From atop Shibuya Sky, we took in the sweeping views of the famed Shibuya Crossing, a scene that felt plucked straight from the bustling streets of Manhattan but with a distinctive Tokyo flair. Morning visits are recommended for capturing the sunrise over the cityscape, avoiding the crowds and basking in solitude high above the chaos.
We made our way to the iconic Shibuya Crossing, preparing to immerse ourselves in the wave of human traffic. Nearby, the Hachiko Statue serves as a touching reminder of loyalty and love, a sweet prelude as you head over to Starbucks Reserve Roastery for a different kind of adventure. This isn't just any coffee shop; it's an immersive journey into the craft of coffee-making with the added bonus of collectible cards.

Immersive Art and Disneyland Delight

Tokyo continues to amaze with experiences like teamLab Planets TOKYO, an immersive art museum unlike any other. With interactive exhibits featuring light, sound, and water, each room offers a new sensory experience. It's an environment that invites visitors to lose all sense of time, forget the outdoor world, and simply become one with the art — a definite must on anyone's itinerary.
For a twist of theme park magic, Tokyo DisneySea offers unique nautical-themed attractions not found anywhere else. While some attractions involve longer waits, the park is sprinkled with delightful snacks and richly themed ports mimicking distant lands. Although not everyone might find it worth an entire day, Disney enthusiasts and families with young children will undoubtedly enjoy what this one-of-a-kind park has to offer.

Charming Kyoto: Temples, Deer, and Bamboo Groves

Onward to Kyoto with the efficient Jr Pass! Our Kyoto adventure began with the brightly painted red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha. This sacred site invites exploration all through its winding staircases and enchanting avenues. A must-visit for both spiritual seekers and photography enthusiasts alike. Remember to visit local shops around the temple for unique, personalized souvenirs, like custom-engraved chopsticks.
A day trip to Nara Park, accessible with your Jr Pass, promises a whimsical encounter with freely wandering deer. These gentle creatures have become a symbol of the region, often bowing in greeting to visitors bearing treats. Moving away from snack stalls rewards you with a more personable deer experience, making this one of our favorite memories from our trip.
An escape into the natural allure of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto offers a tranquil retreat from the city's hustle. Walking through these towering green stalks is like stepping into another world—peaceful and surreal. Nearby, you can visit the Tenryu-ji Temple or a quick stroll takes you to the verdant beauty of surrounding gardens.
