Upon arrival in Porto, we chose to stay at Hotel San J. This quaint three-star hotel is conveniently located near many of Porto’s iconic sites. After settling in, you are just a stone's throw away from exploring the city on foot. The cozy ambiance and prime location make it an ideal stay for couples looking to immerse themselves in the local culture.

A short walk from our hotel took us to the Via Kadina Shopping Mall. It's not just a shopping destination but a place where architecture and creativity collide. We were particularly enchanted by the food court, which is designed as small houses. It’s the perfect spot for snapping a few memorable photos and enjoying some local bites.

On our quest for unique finds, Santa Catarina Street did not disappoint. Known for its diverse shopping experience, this bustling avenue is filled with chain stores and unique boutiques. One of the highlights was a shop designed like an underground metro station solely dedicated to footwear—a quirky and fun stop that showcases Porto's flair for creative retail spaces.

For an immersive overview of Porto's past, we experienced The Ultimate 5D Flight. This ten-minute journey sweeps you into Porto's history with dynamic visuals that are both educational and entertaining. It's an ideal introduction for first-time visitors looking to appreciate the city's rich heritage.

Our stroll led us towards the São Bento Train Station area. While we didn’t board any trains, the surrounding areas are peppered with picturesque streets ideal for leisurely walks. Unique to this location is the Giant Sardine Shop, a whimsical store offering an array of colorful and vibrant canned fish that make for excellent souvenirs.

Monte G is a destination you won’t want to miss. Famous for its divine pastéis de nata, this charming eatery offers a front-row view of how their renowned custard tarts are made. As a sweet treat or a savory snack, these pastries are a delicious slice of local culture that will surely leave you craving more.

Our evening was capped by a visit to the Clerigos Church for a virtual reality experience. Held nightly, this event offers a unique exploration of the church's architecture and history. For the best views, sitting at the sides is recommended, though it might make your neck a bit sore from looking up. Still, it's an unforgettable experience that complements the palpable history of Porto.

As night descended, we ventured to Bolhão Market, a vibrant space bustling with vendors offering everything from fresh produce to artisanal chocolates and olive oils. Offering a glimpse into Porto's everyday life, it’s a must-visit for those interested in tasting the authentic flavors of the region.

Located above Bolhão Market, Irad 1980 serves up traditional Portuguese cuisine in a charming setting. We indulged in their expertly cooked octopus and steak, both cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. This is the kind of meal that embodies the heartiness and warmth of Porto's culinary offerings.

Discovering Wine and Culture at the World of Wine

On a rainy second day, we headed to the World of Wine, a cultural district teeming with museums and activities. It is a haven for lovers of history, wine, and everything in between. This expansive area is perfect for exploring on a dreary day, offering educational moments with a touch of indulgence.

After a day immersed in wine at the World of Wine district, we took a short walk to Taylor's Winery Restaurant. Known for their fine wine selection and exquisite dining experience, we savored a delicious meal of duck and beef in an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. It's a must-visit, especially for wine enthusiasts looking to pair superb local wines with gourmet cuisine.

Chocolate lovers will find joy in the Chocolate Story Museum. By exploring the production process from cacao bean to bar, this museum offers a delightfully sweet journey. The hands-on experiences, samples, and the ability to win your own chocolate bar make this a memorable stop and a highlight of our culinary exploration.

The Pink Palace Museum, though more for those enthusiastic about rosé wine, offers an aesthetically pleasing experience coupled with tastings of various rosés. It's an engaging space for those inclined toward bright and playful photo opportunities and is still a pleasant stop even for casual admirers.

Day Trips and Nearby Adventures

No trip to Porto is complete without visiting the Lello Bookstore. Rumored to have inspired parts of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, it's an enchanting place with its stunning architecture and rich literary history. Tickets are a bit pricey, but the cost is redeemable towards book purchases, making it worth the visit for any book lover.

Just an hour's drive from Porto, Costa Nova Beach in Aveiro invites you into a different picturesque setting. Known for its iconic striped houses and quiet sandy shores, this beach town offers a peaceful escape and a splash of vibrant color. It’s a must-visit for some leisurely time by the sea.

After a day by the beach, dinner at Aveiro’s CodFish House was a delectable finale. While renowned for its cod dishes, it also serves a variety of Portuguese staples. Each bite was a testament to Aveiro’s commitment to freshly prepared and beautifully presented meals.

Known as the Portuguese Venice, Aveiro’s Canals offer charming boat tours along its waterways. The bridges adorning the canals often hold colorful threads, each representing the dreams and wishes of visitors. It’s a whimsical way to appreciate the serene beauty of this quaint town.
